Trending topics are no longer just for the news cycle – businesses of all kinds can benefit from making their voice a part of relevant conversations. It’s all about making those quick connections with both your existing and potential customers.

But here’s the thing: trend cycles move quickly these days. And turning around marketing assets within a tight timeline can be a major pain point for growing brands. As organizations scale, they put processes in place to keep things sailing smoothly. However, waiting two weeks for a new email design? That’s an eternity in today’s rapidly changing world!

That’s where the Ragnarok team comes in, and boy, are we big on templates! In fact, one of our first orders of business when kicking off with a new client (after we dazzle them with super duper awesome fun facts) is creating an email design template system. We’d even go so far as to say that it’s our secret weapon.

Why? Because having a defined email design system upfront means we already have more than half the answers in place whenever we create a new design. This dramatically cuts down the time it takes to get your message out in front of customers.

Now, we know the word “template” can sometimes feel like a four-letter word itself. So, to make things fun, we’re going to play a game of two truths and a lie – email template edition! We’ll share some of our best practices for winning templates and debunk some template myths along the way.

Ready to separate fact from fiction? Let’s dive in!

Truth or Lie #1:

Defining template use cases upfront is crucial.

TRUTH! Designing a template without properly gathering use case requirements is like riding a train without tracks. It’s important to invest upfront time with the teams who will be using the template the most (usually a mix of content creators, marketers, and product folks). This ensures that the design system is comprehensive and covers the most common messaging needs.

Truth or Lie #2:

Team training is the key to success.

TRUTH! Having a template without a training plan is like having a lock without a key. Teams need to be trained on how to effectively use the template system in order to unlock its full potential. And here’s a helpful tip: don’t just stop at one training session. Template systems are designed to be versatile, so once your team has grasped the basics, they can explore more advanced tweaks and experimentation within the building blocks.

Truth or Lie #3:

Templated emails are boring and get low engagement.

LIE! LIE LIE! Templates don’t have to be dull, my friends. By properly gathering use case requirements upfront (as mentioned in #1), you can accommodate your brand’s design needs both in terms of communication and visuals. In fact, many of our brands experience higher engagement rates with templated emails because their audience becomes familiar with the visual communication pattern.
